I originally posted this to Photography last week, but thought I’d share with those of you who don’t make it over to that space. I haven’t looked at all of my photos from our trip, but so far, this is my favorite.

What I love about that memorial is how hushed it gets as you walk along. Everyone starts at the top talking and as they walk down it gets quiet very quickly, without any signs or commands. Such an utterly fantastic memorial.

It really is. It draws you down into the heart of it, and you have to slowly climb out. I think that may be a metaphor for something....

I remember it being something about how we were entering the war and then going out of it. I think it might be chronological as to the names (I’m not really sure on the second one).

That focus combined with how the wall acts a mirror really makes a great transition. Love the shot.

Thanks. When we saw it last year, our tour guide said that the reflection on the wall is meant to show that anybody could have been on the wall. I took a similar shot last year , with my son as the subject, and it is a powerful shot in light of the guide’s comments. But I think this year’s shot is better.

Yes, the names are chronological from left to right.

I recall that shot, actually. Surprised I didn’t comment on it. I’ll agree with you about this year’s shot.
I’ve always been struck by the memorial. I remember learning about it in 3rd grade and thinking it was so simple but it made sense to have all the names up on a wall for people. I remember the details of the design and everything but didn’t actually understand the impact until my family went to D.C. when I was in 8th grade. It’s really something.
